Worldbuilding Power: Evocation
Use energy-harnessing magic in character development, worldbuilding, and adventures!
To evoke is to call forth and manipulate various types of energies and forces. These include fire, electricity, heat and cold, light and darkness, and even eldritch energy itself. It is the magic of raw power. Unlike other categories of magic, evocation comes with no innate moral and ethical considerations other than the way the caster chooses to wield it.
Antagonists will seek to leverage the same forces, with intentions that are clearly not as ethically centered as a protagonist. They will use this category of magic to cause death and destruction, often on a mass scale. The energies they evoke will be put to use furthering their selfish desires. A villain will use evocation as a weapon in their personal arsenal when they execute their evil schemes.
As with all magic, there will be some fear and misunderstanding among the common folk. The title evoker suggests that the caster has access to incredible and devastating power. Such casters will face ill will from those who fear the possible effects of such abilities, no matter how they are used. Many people will be concerned about their lives and property, should they get caught up in a spell’s effect. There may be a great deal of distrust if evocation is used openly, even for defensive purposes.
In this book, we’ll show you how to utilize evocation in your worldbuilding endeavors. You’ll see how it can influence character, setting, and story elements. By the end, you’ll understand how to make evocation into an essential, useful, and entertaining part of your campaign.
