Reality Check: August 3 2020

Dancing Lights Press

An important caveat, news on upcoming releases, RPGaDay, and more on Domnio. Here’s the Dancing Lights Press Monday morning Reality Check: August 3 2020.

An Important Caveat

The world is a hot mess right now. Dancing Lights Press is a one-person operation. I’m also a United States citizen living as an expat in Finland and, this bears repeating. There’s a lot of potential for things to happen that are beyond my control. Keep that in mind as the read the rest of this newsletter, because everything is subject to change.

Coming Soon: Hippogryph Codex

I desperately want to release this system by the end of this week. It’s going to depend largely on whether I end up at the library printing off dozens of pages of paperwork for immigration. Seriously. I’m truly stoked to release the Hippogryph Codex, I’m pleased with how it’s turned out, but I still need a few days to complete the formatting and give it one more editing pass.

Coming Soon: Adventure Generator I & II

I realize that I’ve mentioned these a lot, but have never explained what they are. Since I plan on releasing them this month (see the caveat above), I need to rectify that with a blog post above. Basically they are some random tables to decide on a theme, an environment, a monster, and a plot. From there, you can add your own creativity and flesh those elements out into an adventure for any fantasy system or setting.

Coming Soon: Building Monsters

If all goes well, I’ll get to release this by the end of August as well. Otherwise, this will come out in September. The premise of this one is similar to Building Characters, but for adversarial creatures. Select a type, subtype, and environment (based on the D20 classifications), and flesh out the monster’s motivations, personality, and other elements. For any system or setting, it can easily be used to  develop science fiction aliens, supervillains, or other foes in addition to fantasy monsters.

Latest Release: Domnio

Even though it was released with no build up and zero hype, I’m surprised that Domnio isn’t selling better. In theory it’s the type of things that ought to sell well, given the popularity of D&D hacks. On the other hand, it’s also the sort of thing that a lot of people expect you to give away for free, or to make pay-what-you-want. I’ve got reasons for not doing either of those things, and I might write an update about it if anyone cares.

Anyway, Domnio is available in the Shop and on DriveThruRPG.

The RPGaDay 2020 Challenge

Because I’m dedicating some time each day to work on improving this site, I’ve decided to participate in the 2020 RPGaDay challenge. That means a new post every single day during the month of August, where I will share positive experiences and insights about tabletop roleplaying. Thank You for Your Support

There has to be a better way to say this, but I do appreciate all of the support you’ve given me. I know this is a tough time for everyone right now. Whether you’ve been reading my work for years or just recently picked up your first Dancing Lights Press PDF, thank you.

Reality Check: July 27 2020

Dancing Lights Press

A Hippogryph Codex update, Adventure Generator, Mansions & Misfits, and more! Here’s the Dancing Lights Press Monday morning Reality Check: July 27 2020. Here’s the Dancing Lights Press Monday morning Reality Check: July 27 2020.

Reality Check: July 27 2020Reality Check: July 27 2020

This is going to be a short update because my week is packed with personal life stuff (I won’t bore you; that’s what my personal website is for). Here’s the highlight reel:

Website Updates

Everything works and nothing has exploded. Placeholder copy is slowly being replaced with the final wording. The biggest side quest is the yet-to-be-revealed Glossary page, which is more of a Dancing Lights Press Style Guide. So when I prattle on about adventure goals and player agency and that sort of nonsense, you can look up what I’m talking about.

Hippogryph Codex

I’ve already pushed this back due to the Christmas in July sale (tl;dr new releases get buried during site-wide sales at DriveThru). Because I’m not going to be in the office for a good portion of this week, I’m going to kick it down the road to new week so I can give the launch my full attention. At least the thing is done, and I haven’t taken money from backers that I’m leaving on the hook.

Adventure Generator

This is now being split into two 96-page volumes. There was just no way to get everything into one book. Each stands alone, and covers different types of adventures. At this point it’s written and just needs to be edited within an inch of its life.

Mansions & Misfits: A DoubleZero Setting

This idea has been tickling my brain for a while. I want to be clear that this is nothing more than a pile of notes at this stage. There’s a whole “quirky family living in a strange old mansion” genre that I thing remains untapped. The X-Men, the Doom Patrol, the Umbrella Academy, The Royal Tenenbaums. J.D. Salinger’s Glass Family stories, and so on.  It is not going to be a superhero expansion for DoubleZero. Maybe costumes, Batman-type stuff, but no powers. That defeats the point of the system. It is going to be about exceptional people doing exceptional things in a weird yet oddly mundane world.

Reality Check: July 20 2020

Dancing Lights Press

The website overhaul, a Hippogryph Codex status update, the Christmas in July sale, and more. Here’s the Dancing Lights Press Monday morning Reality Check: July 20 2020.

Reality Check: July 20 2020

Oh, hi. Welcome to the first-ever Monday morning Reality Check from Dancing Lights Press, This is going to be an informal weekly newsletter-style update. It will be sent out to people who opt in at our website to received notifications via email. Otherwise, you can just read it at the Dancing Lights Press website.

Site Overhaul

The Reality Check is part of an overall revamping of the Dancing Lights Press site. We’re currently adding our own shop and generally making the site more useful and easier to navigate. There’s still a lot to be done, but things have been shaping up rather quickly. While we’re still going to be selling at DriveThruRPG, the Shop will have some exclusives and all of our cornerstone titles.

Hippogryph Codex Update

All of my efforts this week are focused on releasing the Hippogryph Codex. I may  push it until after the Christmas in July sale is over. Traditionally new releases tend to get buried by site-wide sales at DriveThruRPG. That not only hurts initials sales, but the book’s performance in the long run.
