Reality Check: July 27 2020Reality Check: July 27 2020

This is going to be a short update because my week is packed with personal life stuff (I won’t bore you; that’s what my personal website is for). Here’s the highlight reel:

Website Updates

Everything works and nothing has exploded. Placeholder copy is slowly being replaced with the final wording. The biggest side quest is the yet-to-be-revealed Glossary page, which is more of a Dancing Lights Press Style Guide. So when I prattle on about adventure goals and player agency and that sort of nonsense, you can look up what I’m talking about.

Hippogryph Codex

I’ve already pushed this back due to the Christmas in July sale (tl;dr new releases get buried during site-wide sales at DriveThru). Because I’m not going to be in the office for a good portion of this week, I’m going to kick it down the road to new week so I can give the launch my full attention. At least the thing is done, and I haven’t taken money from backers that I’m leaving on the hook.

Adventure Generator

This is now being split into two 96-page volumes. There was just no way to get everything into one book. Each stands alone, and covers different types of adventures. At this point it’s written and just needs to be edited within an inch of its life.

Mansions & Misfits: A DoubleZero Setting

This idea has been tickling my brain for a while. I want to be clear that this is nothing more than a pile of notes at this stage. There’s a whole “quirky family living in a strange old mansion” genre that I thing remains untapped. The X-Men, the Doom Patrol, the Umbrella Academy, The Royal Tenenbaums. J.D. Salinger’s Glass Family stories, and so on.  It is not going to be a superhero expansion for DoubleZero. Maybe costumes, Batman-type stuff, but no powers. That defeats the point of the system. It is going to be about exceptional people doing exceptional things in a weird yet oddly mundane world.

About Dancing Lights Press

Dancing Lights Press is a lo-fi publisher of tabletop roleplaying systems and system-agnostic creative aids, including the best selling Building series, the DoubleZero action thriller system, and Hippogryph, a fantasy story game system with traditional  roots. Our products embrace a minimalist aesthetic in design and presentation because roleplaying is an activity, not a collection of expensive rulebooks.

  1. Mansions and Misfits sounds like the sort of setting where, when one thinks of “The Avengers,” one is more likely to think of John Steed and Mrs Peel.
Or perhaps Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased), where Hopkirk is really only a manifestation of Randall’s unconscious mind answering the partner “What would Hopkirk do?” by hallucinating Hopkirk to advise him of what Randall really ought to be doing.

    1. Just so. Quirky geniuses and exceptional talents, but not slam-bang superheroes and a lot of noisy explosions.

      1. Honestly, I would love to co-produce with you on this proTject in particular. My Spiral Room stories – Den & Lauren, Taken Under, Lamplight – are set firmly in this quirky, low key genre.
