Inspiration: Comedies from the early 1960s that had strong fantasy elements. The Addams Family, Batman ‘66, Bewitched, Get Smart, Gilligan’s Island, I Dream of Jeannie, The Monkees, The Munsters, My Favorite Martian, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Elements from dramas with fantastic overtones, and shows lacking a contemporary setting, also have an influence: Dark Shadows, The Green Hornet, Hogan’s Heroes, Lost in Space, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Prisoner, The Wild Wild West.

Genre: Campy Situation Comedy with fantasy elements.

Location: Sherwood Park, a fictional bedroom community in Southern California in the early 1960s.

Mood: Light Comedy

Theme: Perception versus Reality

Conflict: The keepers of the secret history of the world, versus those who would exploit that knowledge for their own personal gain.

History: There is a secret history of the world. Magic, monsters, and aliens from outer space. This is not a cover-up, because even the government isn’t fully aware that these things exist. Rather, it is the witches, genies, Martians, and other creatures who choose to remain hidden for their own safety.

Wonders: Simple Magic and Mad Science

Organizations:

  • Big Zero Network, an alliance of people hiding their true nature. Also, a television network airing reruns of old 1960s sitcoms.
  • The Gladiolas, a support group for people who have seen strange things and work together to prove they’re real.
  • Sherwood Park Police Department, keeping the peace between wacky neighbors.

Daily Life: The perfect middle class lifestyle as portrayed in the upbeat, cheerful sitcoms of the early 1960s.
