How to Gamemaster

How to GamemasterA manual for running any tabletop roleplaying game using any system, setting, or genre.

My first experience with tabletop a roleplaying games was as the gamemaster. It was 1979, and my friends and I had pooled our money to buy the Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set. None of us had ever played before. There was no one else to run for us, or teach us how things were supposed to work. I read the rules and made up some characters, but I had no idea what I was supposed to do. After picking some monsters that looked cool to fight, and drawing a rudimentary map, I made it up as I went along. It was a lot of fun, but it took a while before I felt like I knew what I was doing.

If I’d had a book to show me what to do, I wouldn’t have spent so much time figuring things out on my own. I could have been sharpening other skills, rather than sorting out what the fundamentals were. That’s why I wrote How to Gamemaster. It’s my attempt to create the how-to manual I wish I’d had over 40 years ago.

How to Gamemaster includes the following chapters:

  • An overview of the gamemaster’s role, with an explanation of the many jobs you will take on.
  • What materials, both required and optional, you’ll need in order to run a game.
  • A guide to identifying different types of players and what they’re looking to get from a game.
  • How to prepare for adventures, game sessions, and campaigns.
  • What Session Zero is, why it’s important, and how to successful run one for your group.
  • Advice on how to run a game session from start to finish, based on decades of experience.
  • How to let yourself be human, dealing with inevitable mistakes, and managing player issues.
  • Tips on teaching new players about roleplaying, the setting, and the mechanics of the game.
  • A glossary of commonly used tabletop roleplaying terms.

The State of Dancing Lights Press, February 2021

Hello, everyone!

I’ve been answering people individually, but I wanted to take a moment to address a few things here. Dancing Lights Press hasn’t released anything new since before Christmas. A few titles that had been announced as in the works, but I’ve been pretty quiet for several weeks. This is unusual, because with rare exceptions there are typically at least 2 to 3 new releases each month, going all the way back to 2016.

Everything is fine. I am not not ill, knock wood. My wife and family are doing great. In these times you can’t take health and safety for granted, so I thank you for asking. My relative silence has all been business-related.

2021 is the 5th anniversary of Dancing Lights Press. We released our first product on 31 May, 2016. Five years of doing this full-time. I never would have imagined it. These past  weeks I’ve been planning what I want to do for the next five years, and beyond.

I have an opportunity to take things up a notch. What that means specifically is too complex to get into here, but I have a chance to grow Dancing Lights Press significantly over the next several months. To do that has required some reorganization. Because I’m  a one-person operation I’ve had to focus on the business side of things, rather than the creative side, for a while.

Here’s what’s happening in the short term:

The next releases will be How to Gamemaster, the DoubleZero Gamemaster Manual, and the Hippogryph Gamemaster Manual. These new books are going to be A5 (bullet journal) size, in PDF, epub, and Kindle formats and eventually in print-on-demand. That’s going to be our standard going forward.

Many existing titles are being “remastered”. They’re being reedited,  with some being additionally revised and expanded. That process has been ongoing since last autumn, with an eye on releasing all of the updates at once for the ainniversary. These books will be reformatted to A5 size as well. There’s a reason for the size change, but I’d be talking out of turn to tell you more now.

Remastered titles won’t be released as new editions. When they’re ready they’ll be pushed as file updates on DriveThruRPG. If you’ve already bought them, or purchase them in the meantime, you will get the remastered digital versions for free. You should get a notification, if you’re opted in, and I’ll be posting the news in this space as well.

In order to move forward, I needed to go back and fix some things. Once that’s been done, I’ll be completing the things that were previously announced, as well as some surprises that have been planned for a while.

I know many of you still have questions, so please feel free to reach out to me via the contact form. I will answer as much as I’m able at the moment. Otherwise, stay tuned!

Thank you again for your support,

Berin Kinsman
