Lightspress Newsletter: January 2022

News and Updates from Lightspress Media

Hi, everyone!

To kick off the New Year and a new era for this newsletter, I thought I’d take a moment to re-introduce myself. My name is Berin, and I’m a tabletop roleplayer. Like most people, I started with Dungeons & Dragons but have played and gamemastered dozens of different systems over the years. In 2016 I started Dancing Lights Press while I was living in Finland. After moving back to the United States in 2021, the company has evolved into Lightspress Media. While I’m best known these days for system-neutral creative aids, I’m the designer of DoubleZero, a modern system for more realistic settings without magic or superpowers. I am also the creator of Hippogryph, a story-driven fantasy roleplaying system.

In 2022 all of our core books are getting an overhaul. I’m revising the top bestsellers with Director’s Cut editions and will release hardcover versions throughout the year. Every game line will be expanded with new, original sourcebooks. By December, Lightpress Media will have a foundation to build upon over the next few years. If you want to know more, keep reading. At the end of this issue, you’ll see where to follow us so you never miss the latest news!

I hope you’re doing well today.

DoubleZero: Director’s Cut

The release of the DoubleZero Director’s Cut will be on January 27th. This edition has a new core mechanic that preserves the spirit of the original but doesn’t require any charts or tables. There are streamlined rules for weapons, vehicles, and gadgets. Overall it’s a leaner system that plays a lot smoother. It’s also less tied to the action/espionage genre, opening up possibilities for a broad array of settings. If you own the current edition at DriveThruRPG, the digital files will be updated in your library. Otherwise, it will be available to purchase at all of the usual places.

DoubleZero: Licensed

Licensed is the setting people have been asking for. Based on classic franchises like The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Avengers, Mission Impossible, and James Bond, this spy-fi setting features improbable gadgets, doomsday devices, and secret organizations seeking to take over the world! There are rules for creating both heroic and villainous agencies. You’ll find sample characters, equipment, and hooks for a whole series of adventures! Licensed will be available on the same day as the Director’s Cut, and uses that version of the rules.

Director’s Cut Releases

Revised and updated versions of Building Characters and Building Worlds are now available. If you previously bought them from DriveThruRPG, the new digital files can be re-downloaded from your My Library page. You don’t need to re-purchase them!

The next Director’s Cut releases will be Building Adventuresand How to Gamemaster.

Merch Update

Currently, I am working on acquiring a new supplier for t-shirts, hoodies, and other merch. I want to be sure that the items are of good quality, that the screen printing is top-notch, and that they can fulfill orders promptly. Global supply chain issues have played havoc with a lot of reputable companies. It might take a while. As soon as I find a new partner, several designs are ready to go.

Print-on-Demand Update

Building Characters and Building Worlds are at the printer. Once we have received and reviewed the proofs, they will be available to order from DriveThruRPG. For the moment, all books will be durable hardcover editions, priced at $15. People have asked for hardcovers, and with the standard 6×9 inch, 96-page format, all of our books will travel well in a bag without tearing your shoulder off due to excess weight.

Backlog Update

The following titles are in the process of being revised and given the Director’s Cut treatment. They will be released between now and April. Because they’re being worked on in between new releases, exact dates are subject to change. Basically, I’m releasing them as they’re finished.

  • Building Worlds 2
  • Adventure Generator 1
  • Adventure Generator 2
  • Building Theme
  • Building Monsters
  • DoubleZero Gamemaster Guide
  • Hippogryph Core Book
  • Hippogryph Gamemaster Guide

System Reference Document Update

The System Reference Document for DoubleZero is being compiled now. The goal is to have it available no later than March. It will be available in both plain text and PDF format on the Lightspress Media website and our Patreon. A Hippogryph SRD will follow, tentatively in April following the release of that system’s Director’s Cut.

All of our SRD documents will carry a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. This means you are free to share, copy, and redistribute the material in any medium or format. You can adapt, remix, transform, and build upon the material for any purpose, even commercially. All you need to do is give us credit. I am using this instead of the Open Gaming License because there is no share-alike clause; you do not need to make your creations available for others to use unless you want to.

The SRD will not allow you to use the DoubleZero or Hippogryph trade names. Separate licenses are in the works and will be available later in 2022.

Errata Update

We have updated the digital files for Building Characters and Building Worlds to correct inconsistencies in terminology between books. Corrections happened before ordering proofs; the print version will contain the most recent text. Errata files will be created and maintained if further issues arise after the book is available in print.
