Dancing Lights Press Forums?

Dancing Lights Press

A question that comes up periodically is when (rarely whether) I’ll be setting up Dancing Lights Press forums on this site. Spoiler alert: never. The answer is never. Allow me to explain why:

Dancing Lights Press Forums

This is a one-person operation. I don’t have time to moderate forums. If you haven’t been on the internet in the past 20 years, they need a lot of careful shepherding and adjudication. It’s been suggested that I could use volunteers, but that still requires watching the watchmen.

There are a lot of security issues with forum software. It can require frequent updating, up to the point where it stops working or is no longer supported. Where moderation creates a safe space for discussion, software needs to create a safe space for your data.

With a few exceptions, internet forum usage appears to be down across the board. I’m already leaning all-in on blogging and zines, so I’ve reached the quota for outmoded media. Conversations have moved to social media and platforms like Discord.

And if I’m being completely transparent and brutally honest, there really isn’t a lot of conversation going on. Not in those other spaces, and not in the comments on this site. You can argue that if I build it they will come, but I don’t see that happening.

About Dancing Lights Press

Dancing Lights Press publishes creative aids and story games that embrace a minimalist aesthetic in design and presentation. The spotlight belongs on the creativity of the players as they converse and collaborate on plot, worldbuilding, and character development. Roleplaying is an activity, not a book. Our titles are merely part of the delivery system.
